Lot Description:

Model:  1876             Caliber:     45-60           Serial Number:     9829     Year Made:   1880      Barrel 28" Full Octagon

Estimated:  $2500 - $5000

Winchester Lever Action repeating rifle,   Chambered in  cal. 45-60  This would be considered the classic "Sporting Rifle" style. Although the standard sporting model came with a 28” barrel, this has a 28”  full Octagon barrel.  The integrated tubular magazine has a 15 round capacity.

Serial number:  9829     Produced in New Haven, Connecticut  in the year 1880 making this rifle a true Antique by any description and per U.S. Code Title 18 as "antique firearm" defined as made in OR before (pre-1899).

This rifle is sure to turn heads when on display.  Collectors and non-collectors alike can appreciate the rich history and innovation that came with the 1876 Winchester.   Seize the opportunity to own an incredible piece of the old west and U.S. history.

Bring home the history with this awesome antique Winchester lever action rifle. Marketed as "The gun that won the west."   Winchester produced the 1876 just in time for America's 100th birthday, hence this legendary "Centennial Model" was born.  Unveiled to the public at the Centennial International Exhibition, also the first U.S. World's Fair, held right here in the once great city where our republic was formed, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Only 63,871 model 1876's were made in total across all years of production, beginning 1876 until production ceased in1898.   This less than 64k number represents the total made across All years, All calibers, All barrel lengths and styles. This 40-60 Winchester Center Fire cartridge seems to be the least common caliber produced making it a more rare version of the 1876.  The 45-75 wcf  dominated the majority of the Centennial models and was the only caliber offered for the first years of production.  The year 1879 introduced the second and third of the four total main calibers, the 45-60 wcf and the 50-95 Express which was popular with the Canadian Northwest Mounted police.  According to records, the Canadian force ordered 750 units, chambered in the large 50-95 flavor, in just one order.  The 40-60 w.c.f. caliber was the forth and final big game caliber added later 1883/1884.  This coincides with the year this weapon was produced.  Per it's serial number, #40699 was produced in 1883.

Some auction notes:

1 lot closing per minute,  Every lot has its own live clock.
Soft / dynamic closing with < 3 minutes remaining.  When a bid is placed with less than 3 minutes remaining on the clock, that clock resets to 3 minutes.   This allows time for the other bidder to decide to bid again or not and continues until the parties stop entering bids.  When the clock reaches zero, the lot closes out.  This simulates the back and forth of a live auction.  Please note:  When time is extended on a particular lot due to last 3 minute bidding, the rest of the auction is not delayed.  It does NOT hold up the following lots from closing out and being sold.  Pay attention to each lot's clock.  If you are bidding on multiple lots and/or can't log in for the auction closing, you can enter your maximum bid amounts and your dashboard will bid on your behalf.  It will automatically place the next required bid for you in the event somebody places a competing bid against you.  The dashboard will only bid enough to keep you on top of the competition, but no more than you have entered.
